 Guest post:Mojos local metal night review by Liam Williams at 10:10 AMMojos has been getting a lot of buzz for touring acts Hugo, D’Amato, and other shows being put on with rick shoes, and Utah indie shows. In fact from this partnership were certain to see many incredible shows being brought to this café and gallery in the heart of Ogden. However mojos stays true to its roots and remains a great venue for musicians of all ages, styles, experience levels, and following to showcase their music, and have a great experience doing it. Saturdays are usually themed nights; last Saturday was metal with Flames Breach Our Mouths, lovingly referred to as f.b.o.m., Amplitude, The Dark Past, and Numbered with the Dead, Some very diverse music, but all firmly in the metal veins. The night opened up with fbom, a modern metal band in the veins of under oath, as I lay dying, perhaps some from Autumn to ashes in there, opened up the night. There power trio is solid, with a full sound, musically there very talented young men, good songs, tight break downs, great energy, some solid head banging riffs and enough lyrical content to make it interesting even though you cant always make out the words. These boys are good, but there not phenomenal yet. It feels as though when they're on stage together they're moving around each other. Doug does a good job of getting low but frankly crab core from only the front man looks a little out of place. If they can get there energy up just a bit more from all members they will put on an incredible show, but they did open this night up well. Next up was Amplitude, I’m pretty sure these kids were still in high school, which I only say because they're a hell of a lot better than I was in high school. I’ve always loved that mojos is a venue that allows young musicians to cut there teeth in a pretty relaxed environment, where they don’t get ridiculed or face harsh criticism. Right when I first met these kids I was worried they might be trying a bit to hard with there appearance. Normally bands who put that much effort into there appearance are over compensating for poorly written music, however it turned out that they were more than face painted stitches, and ripped up shirts. They're front woman 'star shine' has one hell of a set of pipes on her, from clean vox to screams to growls. Unfortunately while the band was skilled, and the crowd was loving there wasn’t much show to the band. It’s called shoe gazing, where musicians stand on stage, play well and admire there shoes. When this band gets into their music and starts rocking out to the music they make, They will be great. There is a lot of potential there. The Dark Past got me very excited. Music is a skill you develop with practice and these guys have years under there collective belt. They were exciting, their music was well written, technical, energetic and heavy. The trio had such a full sound they had no room for other members, and used every bit of space afforded to them. At one point bassist/ vocalist nick stepped out into the crowd and played a bass solo. Guitarist Adrian made good use of the be awesome here platform, and all while playing great technical death metal with a touch of grind core without the chug chug. I couldn’t tell you a single word of their songs, but I could tell you what their mosh pit felt like. The crowd had been amped up since fbom played their first note. The skill of dark past built that energy and numbered with the dead carried it out till there last note. Numbered with the Dead are metal heads from bountiful. There’s a quote in the movie slc punk “when we are free rebellion comes slow, we grow complacent. But in an oppressive religious state, where the majority doesn’t even belong to said religion, it comes like fire.” These boys brought the fire, heavy growled vocals, screaming guitars, a touch of punk, a great dollop of anger at their oppression, and you have numbered with the dead. They put on a great show with every member taking a little time to show off, bring the energy of the crowd up even more, but not taking away from the music. Im not a huge fan of growls, I like screams at points but growling through the entire song every song isn’t my thing. They did a good job of it, but I would have liked to hear a bit more punk influence to see what it adds to them. All in all it was one hell of a metal night and on the day before Easter Sunday, even better. Hello monday at 10:49 AM Hello there dear readers, The past few days have been so exciting and yet so frustrating. We toured the lovely Ivy lane reception center and fell in love. I really don't think we're even going to look at any other places. Now its just about saving and planning and trying to make it all come together. It is super stressful but i am trying not to let the monetary part ruin my excitement for the rest of it. After we toured the ivy lane we went on a family adventure! We stopped in vintage cupcakes for pink ladies and got a dozen more for my tea party . Next, we went over to the tree house museum for some exhausting family fun. The tree house is so incredible and there is so much to do. We were all tired and ready for a nap before we could visit all the exhibits. After our exhausting run at the tree house hunter fell asleep and the boy and i were ready for some grub. I was craving wings and had a groupon for wing nutz so we headed over. I thought it was a regular restaurant but when i walked in everyone stopped and stared at us and our kid making us feel incredibly awkward so we slowly backed out of there and headed to our favorite spot- Roosters. There is nothing better when you're exhausted than biting into a giant burger and sipping on a cold drink. I love roosters, they are always so nice and the food is fast and good. I am the type of person who will be a loyal customer for life as long as the service is good and the atmosphere is inviting. Ive gone to places with top notch gourmet food that will bring you to your knees but the service was so horrendous i never returned. Roosters has both great food and great service. After all that walking i was ready for home and as soon as i hit the couch i was gone. luckily it gave me a chance to get plenty of rest because in the morning i realized i had forgotten to go to the store for tea party supplies. Sunday morning was a gloriously beautiful morning and i had no problem motivating myself to hop on my bike and head over to the store. The sky was blue, the air was fresh and it was warm enough to bike without gloves. It was definitely a wind in your hair kind of day. The tea party turned out lovely and ended up being 2 parties in one. The first wave of party goers was mellow and sweet, the second wave brought the ruckus. Its a shame my camera died because everyone was dressed up so cute. I'll definitely have to host another party soon. The house was clean, i had my Jammies on and i was going to get some writing done only to find my computer crashed....again. My laptop will only stay on for about 10 minutes at a time before just shutting off , and not from overheating. Its beyond broken, this poor computer needs to be taken out back and put out of its misery. Time to start saving up for a new one, hopefully i can get one before this one dies permanently. Thursday- swoon worthy at 9:00 AMI am literally dancing for joy this glorious morning because i am going to get my hair done by the lovely Alison Compton at salon nouveau. I need a change and my hair is beginning to bore me. Since i have been falling in love all over again with Rilo Kiley decided to get a Jenny Lewis inspired do. To top it all off my sweetie surprised me with a mini shopping spree at modcloth.com. SWOON! They are having their annual cabin fever sale and a ton of amazing things are 75%off. I cant help but fall head over trendy heels for a company founded by a girl and her high school sweetheart. I'm thinking of starting a style blog to feature my love of vintage and to promote a local vintage shop called Urban chic. Any photographers and other clothing obsessed folks interested in being a part of this fantasticness? yeah..i make up words. Wednesday at 10:34 AM As usual Wednesday is jam packed with awesomeness. I am getting over my cold and have mustered up enough energy to clean the heck out of my house. something about being sick gives me an overwhelming urge to sanitize EVERYTHING. Utah women who rock at 9:45 AMWith support from places like women's red rock festival , so many rad venues that embrace local talent without judgment and unwavering community loyalty it's no wonder Utah is full to the brim with talented women. The girls of the indie rock scene here in Utah are not interested in being in the background. They belt out their music with gusto and play their instruments like a gods. They are full of magic and power and they are forces to me reckoned with. A list of all of those to love in Utah would be far too long SO behold my favorites: Plastic furs- lucid, eerie, sexy and captivating, plastic furs invokes images of psychedelic 60's red light erotica and manic dancing. Stefanie Marlow is an incredible drummer and her steady hand keeps you swaying to the beat with images of deserts, moons and go go boots dancing in your mind .  Lindsay Heath- her music is beyond describable. Her harp sounds like 10 hands at once and her beats are haunting. Lindsay Heath writes and performs piano / keys, vocals, drum kit + percussion, guitar, organ, harpsichord as well as creating beats and sounds. She currently performs with the Lindsay heath orchestra with a group of talented musicians creating beautifully haunting music Shanin Blake- Oh how i swoon for this sweet voice. Her bright blue curly hair and love songs make it hard to look away. You can find her singing in a coffee shop, all eyes fixed in her direction hanging onto every word.  S.L.F.M- This manic ukulele playing lady has stolen the hearts of Utah and beyond with her witty lyrics and gifts of mustaches on sticks. Years of hard work playing on the street, at house shows and wooing her audiences with her songs in waves of whispers and growls have played off as she recently opened for sonic youth. Neon trees- neon trees is a local Utah favorite coming out of Provo. Their music has topped the charts and brought the indie spotlight over to Utah. Their drummer Elaine Bradley has inspired countless little girls to pound on the table at dinner time and dream of making it big.  Marney Proudfit- This girl can sing like no other. her voice is raspy and sweet and she can serenade you like a siren. Her first album "go lightly" just came out and you can get it on Amazon HERE. Her song 'give it back' has been repeating in y head for days, i just can't get enough. La Farsa- A unique voice fronts this bands and she is nothing short of magical. Her bluesy voice on top of layers gypsy music, r&b sexuality and ethereal melodies makes for a beautiful mix. Vocalist Erin Haley calls it 'Free market anarchy' and i couldn't agree with her more.  Josaleigh Pollett- like listening to your best friend tell you everything is going to be OK, hearing Josaleigh's music lays a blanket of calm over me. A teenage girl with a guitar may sound like a thousand cliches but this girl has a real talent for songwriting. Listen and weep...literally. Calm paradox- Michelle Kennedy is a driven girl determined to make things happen for herself without having to rely on anyone but her own spirit. Her newest single retrograde is a summer song that has you pressing repeat over and over and over... seriously? sick again?? at 11:47 AM I don't know what happened to my immune system but this winter is kicking my butt. I have an ear infection , i cant hear anything and the pain is well...substantial. But there is always an upside to things. I got to sleep in today without a girl child pouncing on me like a rabid mountain lion, there is a ton of snow outside so i don't feel bad about not going anywhere and i have netflix so unlimited chick flicks, Mountain bike videos and that 70's show at my fingertips. Perhaps my sweetie can finally convince me to play halo with him today. . . or not. So needless to say the promo video has been postponed until march 4th. be sure to RSVP HERE because now that i have more time to prepare there is going to be some really rad goodies for all the volunteers. OK so i have to go lie back down now, my cup of coffee can not compete with the power of prescription strength ibuprofen. I need rest and as usual i decided to postpone all of my writing until Sunday. Today there is a special event for a very special man, BRUCE CARLSON. Bring your honest passion for life like he always exuded. This will be a celebration of his life!!! Potluck! Bring a dish to share along with your stories and art. It's Friday , be prepared at 10:22 AM I had some pretty intense dreams the last couple nights- zombies, giant reptiles in the sea, tidal waves, acid rain. i don't know what it all means but i think today i am just going to stay home, drink smoothies and watch cartoons with the tot. wednesdasy..it's better than a tuesday! at 10:09 AM yesterday! oh yesterday how you betrayed me. what started as a beautiful sunny day went sour in an instant. I biked 6 blocks to the grocery store but by the time i got there y wallet was gone. i backtracked a few times hoping i would find it before someone else did but to no avail. i even sent Bryan out to look for it...nothing. I tried to think of all the positives- but really i couldn't find one. As i finally calmed down i noticed that my daughter was being eerily quiet. Any parent of a toddler knows that quiet is NOT good. I peeked into the kitchen and there she was, chopping off her darling curls, a huge pile at her feet. Honestly i didn't have the emotional energy to be upset so i just started laughing hysterically. OK OK it wasn't the worst day ever. it could have been a lot worse and hay maybe a good Samaritan will return my wallet. Just a few weeks a go a guy dropped his wallet and i returned it to him -with all the cash in it of course. so, doesn't that make me due for a returned wallet? Now here is my question to you readers - IF YOU FOUND A WALLET WHAT WOULD YOU DO? ahh well everything is replaceable and i still have my health and friends and it's Wednesday! so here are todays events go on and enjoy em and try not to get blown over, we got winds of 40MPH out there today. Local Spotlight- Bruce Carlson at 9:25 AM I never had the pleasure of meeting this man but i had the pleasure of hearing the great stories about him. He has certainly made his impact on Ogden and on everyone he has encountered. To some he was a dear friend, a loyal customer, an ambassador of Ogden and to others he was an urban legend. No matter how well someone knew Bruce Carlson he had a way of leaving a lasting impression. The loss of this man has created a wave across Ogden not of sadness really, but of camaraderie. Stories of how one met Bruce, his eccentric ways and funny anecdotes are spreading around and friends of Bruce are uniting in beautiful ways. It seems a fitting tribute to a man who had so much joy. A memorial party, a tour DE Bruce and a fashion show of Bruce's eccentric styles is in the works. If i can only make half the impression that Bruce has left on this community then i say that i have lived my life to its fullest potential , i can say i embraced life wholeheartedly. Here are some of the beautiful, funny, inspiring and true things that Ogden has to say about Bruce Carlson: ♥I never once heard him say anything negative or saw him in a bad mood, always positive, always. he would greet naysayers with a kind word. ♥He understood the world around him in a deep and insightful way, and always shared the love and delight he felt for those around him. ♥He would come in and tell me about his long walks on the Ogden river trail, hanging out in the sauna, his brand new toaster oven, French fashion magazines, and all sorts of random daily activities. Bruce just loved to chat and he loved company ♥The very first time I met Bruce he was wearing a toga.We were at Beatniks listening to poets and he came over to comment on my pearls. He was such a gentle man. We talked for quite a while. The next time I saw him.....HE was wearing pearls ♥When he'd pull up the bar stool next to you, there was no telling where the conversation might go...he might extol the virtues of cashmere or talk about the best website for obscure books or tell you about a film so "Indy" that it made Sundance pics look utterly mainstream. But Bruce lived in the sense of the Thoreau quote..."I went to the woods because I wanted to live deliberately, to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to put to rout all that was not life and not discover, when I had come to die, that I had not lived. ♥Tea in test tubes raised to precise temperatures. Tireless parade of one in second hand women's finery and jewelry from the Metropolitan Museum catalogue. Lover of opera and jazz, Greek theater enthusiast. Man about town who knew everyone but still suffered from profound loneliness. I hope when death found him he was dreaming of Paris ♥He was going to a costume party and wanted me to do his makeup....He wanted his face, shoulders and chest painted in an iridescent rainbow and that's what he got. He wrapped a white cloth around his little hips and called it a Greek god costume. ♥he was a part of the greatest time of my life. blues night wasn't right without Bruce...you could always tell if Bruce liked the band, he would do his shuffle dance. ♥I will miss talking to you about the opera, sex, & how to care and store cashmere sweaters! You were one of the kindest, most genuine people I have ever known. If you know Bruce, were inspired by him or want to honor his memory i encourage you to attend his memorial Sunday the 20Th of February, 5pm at Borrowed Earth Emporium 2242 Washington Blvd. Bring Bruce's favorite dish, your favorite dish, a story, a poem, a song, a hand to hold and an open heart. GROW- The Red Party at 11:35 AMLast night was a momentous night exceeding my expectations and going far beyond. I was graciously gifted a ticket to The Red Party benefit for GROW, the gathering the resources of women group. Grow is an all inclusive, grass roots women’s networking community, created by the women who participate in it. Their sole purpose is to invite all women to come together to create community, have fun, meet new people and to support each other as they all share their creativity, ideas and resources with one another. The event was held at the Crowley art gallery on historic 25Th street. Everyone dressed up in their best shades of red and gathering in the gallery for music, dancing and the flow of endless wine. Revolver, a local Beatles tribute band, held nothing back when they played and they got the crowd dancing until we could no longer stand. The chef made a roast beef that can only be described as 'perfect'. Crème brûlée, lavendar cookies, fudge and other deserts were being passed around and were all incredible. In the mezzanine there was a silent auction as well as a tarot reader. I was feeling open so i tried out my luck with a little tarot and was truly moved by her intuitive reading. Everything was clear and was exactly what i needed to hear, a perfect compliment to a perfect night. This event showed me how powerful having a community of women is, and how amazing the women of Ogden are. Business owners and community members support each other, promote each other and want each other to succeed. They gather all of their knowledge, resources and skills and come together to better the community and to better themselves and each other. It really was a powerful night and i encourage all of you women of Ogden to attend the next grow meeting. I want to thank the women of GROW and all of the amazing people who made this event happen. Thank you for making Ogden the inspiring place that it is and thank you for all your hard work building this community.
