FRIDAY! Great friends, Great music at 11:17 AM![]() Yay its Friday. . .and i am stuck inside nursing my wisdom teeth. f you have wisdom teeth you know that one minute they are fine and the next minute they decide to cause intense pain. Mine are impacted in the worst way and are doing all kinds of crazy things inside my mouth... all 4 of them. Dental insurance is one of those wondrous things i just do not have. I really thought i was never going to get them out. I had applied for medical studies but was denied because i didn't meet the requirements for minimum weight and my teeth were too complicated for small clinics that only offer local anesthetic. Every time i got a quote it was disheartening, i could do one tooth at a time but it already takes all my strength not to lost it during a cleaning , even then it seems like something more pressing comes up just when we have saved enough. Yesterday when the pain flared up again and i asked my friends advice i was sent a little miracle. How simple the idea and yet i had never considered doing it before, a benefit of course! The amazingly generous and loving folks over at Uncommon grounds, now known as cafe mergot, replied to my post saying they would gladly put on a benefit event for me and i found a couple oral surgeons that have sliding scales too. This Saturday night at uncommon grounds come enjoy some rad local music, henna tattoos and more! check out the details on UNCOMMON GROUNDS/CAFE MERGOT FACEBOOK PAGE! Any excess that is raised i would love to donate to anyone else that needs a little help with medical bills. It had always been so hard for me to accept a helping hand . I always felt like i had to do things on my own and prove that i was strong. Recently however i went to a psychi open house and Alison Compton was talking about self worth and how we should be more open to receive as much as we give . Our friends do not help us because they think we are weak, they help us because they love us. I have never been so overwhelmed with kindness in my life, it literally brought be to tears. Only in Ogden would someone help a near stranger without hesitation. So here's to Ogden, best little city in the world. Now get out there and enjoy it! Enjoy it for me too, ill be here on the couch watching power rangers eating applesauce. Local Spotlight: Cloud 9 smoke shop at 12:03 AM![]() If you need hookah and smoking supplies there is a great place to go in Ogden, Utah and that's Cloud 9. I went there yesterday to check out hookah and find some fruity sheesha for my hookah at home. The workers there are incredibly friendly and made me feel like i was visiting an old friend. Cloud 9 has a huge selection of sheesha, incense and smoke supplies. The store smells like a fruit basket from all the flavors! I tried out some blueberry because it smelled like a smoothie and it came in fancy little tin. I have to say I'm eyeing up the pink Ed Hardy hookah and may have to turn my dressing room into a ladies lounge. I admit i don't use a hookah very often, i don't even smoke cigarettes. Every once in a while its just fun to put on belly dance music, eat too much hummus and try out the old hookah. Check out these photos i took of their pretty hookah supplies and check out their WEBSITE.* Here is brief but interesting history of the hookah. Nargile : A Puff on History (reprinted from the Turkish Daily News 3/3/97) But it was in Turkey that the nargile completed its revolution, and did not change its style for the last few hundred years. The nargile became a very important part of the coffee shop culture, finding its popularity in Turkey around the time of Murat the IV'th, 1623-40.The joy that the smokers received from this very simple yet beautiful smoking apparatus was unbelievable. Rules were created even for lighting the pipe, and if a professional smoker saw anyone lighting it the incorrect way, the culprit would be told in no uncertain term " Do yourself and the sacred nargile a favor and put out the coals by blowing into it. "The nargile itself consists of 4 pieces which are as follows: Agizlik (mouthpiece), Lüle (the top of the nargile), Marpuç (the tube) and the Gövde (the body of the pipe which is filled with water). All pieces of the pipe were produced by special craftsmen, who were named after the pece they produced. Even today, the areas where these craftsmen used to concentrate are called by these names, such as "Marpuççular."Lüles were generally produced in Tophane by Lule makers and the govde's (bottles) were manufactured in Beykoz. These govde's were a unique example of Turkish handcraft and were decorated with floral motifs. Some were made out of silver or crystal. The agizlik's (mouthpieces) were generally carved out of the top of quality amber, because people in those days believed that amber was not the because people in those days believed that amber was not the carrier of germs. Not all tobaccos qualified for usage in the nargile, and only the dark tobacco imported from Iran found favor with the nargile user. This toabcco was washed several times before use as it was extremely strong. Only oak charcoal was used to be placed on the top of the tobacco. Some professional nargile smokers used certain fruit, like sour cherries or grapes in their govde just to enjoy the motion it created in the water. Other people enjoyed adding pomegranate juice or rose oil to their water for added flavor. The nargile smoker hated anyone lighting their cigarettes on their nargile fire because they felt it disturbed the rhythm of the burning charcoal. The nargile was so popular and fashionable with the elite ladies of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, that it became the in thing to be photographed with a nargile. If you wanted to be the hostess with the mostest the nargile was a must for popular afternoon tea and intellectual gatherings. Unfortunately like most wonderful things from the past, the nargile suffered a decline with the availability of the cigarettes. But still today, one is able to find a special type of smoker that would only find their enjoyment from smoking the nargile. *** As with all tobacco products you should use it in moderation, be informed of risks and ALWAYS be of legal age. Tuesday in ogden, utah at 11:19 AMI hope you all got out yesterday and enjoyed the last decent park day until the spring rains come back. I biked my tot around to the tree house museum and then up to liberty park where i got to break up a fight between two 7 year olds, school a mom on playground etiquette , and yell at some 5th graders who were screaming incredibly lewd things. Our park adventure was anything but relaxing, what happened to wholesome child's play? I still managed to lure hunter away from the tainted park and over to a grassy field by my house where we played with bubbles and giggled wildly. I'm going to miss these toddler years when she is all grown up. If anyone was at the Atilla and bullet for pretty boy show id love to get a review! MOJOS OGDEN at 11:58 AMLast night was beautiful. I haven't been to a show this good in a while and i missed being able to stay until the end without getting bored. Mojos in Ogden, Utah is like being in that cool art loft you wished you could live at. With comfy couches, strange art and a collection of dangling Christmas lights the crazy lady down the street would be envious of i felt right at home. The bands filed in stashing their gear like a life sized tetris game and fans waited outside anxious to get in from the cold. Blackhounds came onto stage and started out with a bang. The singers raspy, southful voice made every song sound like a serenade. A perfect blend of country and rock n roll beats made me want to grab the nearest stranger and do a little rock n roll waltz but i had a feeling the lanky guy next to me didn't know the first thing about waltzing. See a glimpse of the blackhounds in their video for caught red handed on Youtube HERE. ![]() The Scenic- Its refreshing to see a singer dance on stage recklessly instead of standing there holding a mic. Nothing says 'i love performing' quite like a little hip action. With catchy songs, great musical talent and incredibly attractive members this band is destined for stardom. How i haven't heard of them before is beyond me as i usually obsess over anything i can both dance and fight to. The singers presence made their whole set positively captivating and i must admit i have some serious hair envy. ![]() The Graduate- Beautiful, harmonic melodies and heartfelt songs ; this band lulled me into a romantic waking daydream. Rarely do i feel butterflies when listening to a band play bu i couldn't help but feel like i was witnessing magic. With a highly anticipated album out its no wonder this band is getting a lot of buzz online. Check out their official video and more about their tour on their FACEBOOK. ![]() Sparks the rescue- Equally terrifying and awe inspiring mic acrobatics made it impossible to look away. With amazing guitar riffs and throw your hands in the hair danceability Sparks the rescue is a sure thing. Even with technical difficulties this band wooed the crowd and kept us dancing. Its obvious this band loves to play together and they do it so effortlessly. Check out a sample of their newest song on Youtube HERE. ![]() Dangerous summer- Oh dangerous summer how you've won my heart over. Withing the first few moment of their set i was smitten. Their musical prowess is unmatched and with vocals as smooth as butter there is nothing stopping this band. With years of experience and a loyal following this band is sure to be everywhere you look soon. Check out their new song 'good things' HERE. Keep up with their tour on their FACEBOOK and be sure to catch them on warped tour this summer and keep an eye out for their sophomore album. ![]() Be sure to check out all the bands and stop by one of their shows when they come through your town. The well worn couches, the odd collection of art and the smell of coffee ooze indie cool. Ron Atencio has been putting on local shows for Ogden for years and i can often hear people reminiscing about shows way back when while milling around waiting for the bands to start. Tonight was the first show of hopefully many organized by Rick Shugarts of Rick Shoes Booking Agency based out of salt lake. Normally bands never see Ogden opting rather to play in salt lake but rick shoes saw potential in Mojos in Ogden, Utah and is bringing bigger name bands to our little town. I often hear people complain that not enough bands come through here, so here is your chance folks. Last night was amazing, an intimate show with amazing bands that you wont get to see until warp tour when a thousand people come between you and the stage. If you want Ogden's music scene to thrive, flourish and bloom then come out to the upcoming shows at Mojos! Thursday- donuts in the sun. at 2:08 PM![]() This Thursday is like no other its going to be amazing! The sky is clear, the sun is shining, I'm wearing my my Diane Von Ferstenberg score from urban chic and eating donuts (from toppers) in the park. Life really couldn't get any better, OK if i a computer of my own stumbled into my lap i think it could improve my day just a little. Today i biked over to the hubby's work to hijack his computer and let the bean tour his job. she has been begging me to take her and its finally warm enough to let her visit this frigging warehouse. She loved bikes and hearing her squeal with joy and she enters a building filled with nothing but bike parts is priceless. oh the wonders of being three. If anyone local business, group or band is interested in sponsoring indie Ogden i have one large space and one small space left. Once i fill these spots ill be able to afford my new computer hurray! It is easy to see I am creating a new blog and I am struggling to make it look great, and supply excellent subject matter. I have learned a lot here and I look forward to additional updates and will be returning. I also strongly recommend to watch Hop online, it's awesome movie, rating A+ xoxo, explore, create and have fun ‹Older |
