Utah women who rock at 9:45 AM

With support from places like women's red rock festival , so many rad venues that embrace local talent without judgment and unwavering community loyalty it's no wonder Utah is full to the brim with talented women. The girls of the indie rock scene here in Utah are not interested in being in the background. They belt out their music with gusto and play their instruments like a gods. They are full of magic and power and they are forces to me reckoned with. A list of all of those to love in Utah would be far too long SO behold my favorites:

Plastic furs- lucid, eerie, sexy and captivating, plastic furs invokes images of psychedelic 60's red light erotica and manic dancing. Stefanie Marlow is an incredible drummer and her steady hand keeps you swaying to the beat with images of deserts, moons and go go boots dancing in your mind .

Lindsay Heath- her music is beyond describable. Her harp sounds like 10 hands at once and her beats are haunting. Lindsay Heath writes and performs piano / keys, vocals, drum kit + percussion, guitar, organ, harpsichord as well as creating beats and sounds. She currently performs with the Lindsay heath orchestra with a group of talented musicians creating beautifully haunting music

Shanin Blake- Oh how i swoon for this sweet voice. Her bright blue curly hair and love songs make it hard to look away. You can find her singing in a coffee shop, all eyes fixed in her direction hanging onto every word.

S.L.F.M- This manic ukulele playing lady has stolen the hearts of Utah and beyond with her witty lyrics and gifts of mustaches on sticks. Years of hard work playing on the street, at house shows and wooing her audiences with her songs in waves of whispers and growls have played off as she recently opened for sonic youth.

Neon trees- neon trees is a local Utah favorite coming out of Provo. Their music has topped the charts and brought the indie spotlight over to Utah. Their drummer Elaine Bradley has inspired countless little girls to pound on the table at dinner time and dream of making it big.

Marney Proudfit- This girl can sing like no other. her voice is raspy and sweet and she can serenade you like a siren. Her first album "go lightly" just came out and you can get it on Amazon HERE. Her song 'give it back' has been repeating in y head for days, i just can't get enough.

La Farsa- A unique voice fronts this bands and she is nothing short of magical. Her bluesy voice on top of layers gypsy music, r&b sexuality and ethereal melodies makes for a beautiful mix. Vocalist Erin Haley calls it 'Free market anarchy' and i couldn't agree with her more.

Josaleigh Pollett- like listening to your best friend tell you everything is going to be OK, hearing Josaleigh's music lays a blanket of calm over me. A teenage girl with a guitar may sound like a thousand cliches but this girl has a real talent for songwriting. Listen and weep...literally.

Calm paradox- Michelle Kennedy is a driven girl determined to make things happen for herself without having to rely on anyone but her own spirit. Her newest single retrograde is a summer song that has you pressing repeat over and over and over...

'This is a man's world, but it wouldn't be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl'

Local spotlight- Ogden's Indie folk music scene at 9:52 AM

Ogden Is full of surprises. From the moment i moved here i became obsessed with Ogden's bustling music scene. There are so many amazing metal and country bands but today i am going to give you the lowdown on Ogden's indie folk music scene. what is indie folk music?
Indie folk is a genre of music that is hard to define. The sounds range from soulful mountain melodies to rockin' electric beats. Indie folk is more about the feelings that the music evokes than the actual sounds. Often bands have a lot of members playing unique and traditional instruments but sometimes it is just a person and a guitar. Artists often draw influence form traditional American mountain music, blues and modern indie rock. Bands like radiohead, neutral milk hotel and Elliot smith paved the way but with each new artist the genre evolves.
Indie folk is my favorite genre of music and the best sounds usually comes from small towns like Ogden. The Very first show i went to after moving to Ogden was the Marny Proudfit c-d release show. I got there a bit late and had to leave a bit early but i till managed to be able to see Kat day, santa fe skeletons, beargrowl wolfhowl , mountain hymns and of course Marny Proudfit. I was so impressed with that show and realized that Ogden has a lot more to offer than i realized. so here we go on a tour of the Ogden indie folk bands. . .

Beargrowl, wolfhowl- Scott Ferrin , Ethan Beckstrand, Eric Pectol ,Mitch Olsen blend folk and modern instrumentals beautifully. They play in sync as if they have always played together, as if its what they are meant to do. You can catch a sample of their moving song 'terrified' on their facebook page.
♥Mermaid baby- Jordan Ballou, Jordan DeLaCruz, Logan "Gingie" Arnold formed mermaid baby in 2009 and are currently working on their first c-d. mermaid baby music makes me want to dance wildly. It makes me think of long lost friends and summer adventures. Check out their reverb nation for a sample of some of their music. And be sure to check them out February 12th at the basement.
♥Mountain Hymns- band members are Seaver Yates, Corbyn Henderson, Spencer Reylea, Kramer McCausland, Ryan Reylea. The fist time i saw mountain hymns i fell in love. They are A perfect mix of folk, indie rock and mountain harmony. Their lyrics are haunting and soothing and i just love the organic feel of it all. check out their music HERE.
Marny Proudfit- Marny proudfit gives me chills. Her voice is so incredible. You see her on stage and expect her to whisper and then out comes this incredible voice. Not surprisinlgy Marny just release her first c-d and you can pick one up at one off her upcoming shows and keep a lookout for her music coming soon on itunes .
Josaleigh Pollett- Josaleigh has a sweet voice and even sweeter lyrics. she will sing you to sleep and you will have magic dreams. When i tried to imagine what she looked like all i saw were cats.
♥Jed Keipp- Upbeat and jazzy Jed Keipp sings songs that make you want to fall in love.

Mojo Rising part 2 at 12:50 AM

Being in Mojos is like sitting in my best friends room, high school, sophomore year. She plays a song that makes me want to conquer the world. I'm so full of angst and inspiration. i can do anything, go anywhere. I feel powerful and all i want to do is run as fast as i can. Mojos brings back all of the emotions of my youth that gave me the drive to go further. Mojos is nothing short of magic.

I got to the show a bit late. my parental duties kept me occupied until the last minute when i threw on the last of my clean clothes and headed out the door. luckily the rain had stopped and i was able to bike there and back without looking like a wet cat.  when i got there Kat Day was in the middle of her set. her voice is honest and captivating.  A sweet voice and a depth of character and songs that remind me of good friends and fond memories. i also loved that she played the kazoo.

In between sets  i grabbed a coffee. The man behind the counter was friendly and so very polite. He gave me and orange cup, one of my most favorite colors, and informed me that this heavy cup o' brew was only one dollar. A single dollar, of course i came back for more.

Next Santa Fe skeletons came on or as they were jokingly calling themselves for the holidays Santa sleigh skeletons har har. I loved that they cracked jokes at every opportunity since they were missing a member and feeling a bit off. I loved them despite their mishaps and they really worked the crowd.

Bear growl wolf howl came on stage bearing gifts. the band with my favorite band name ever offered us all something called muddy buddy. Perhaps this is a Utah phenomenon or i am just out of the loop but i have never tried these chocolaty treats. I have to tell you i am sold. Whatever is covering these chex mex pieces is simply addicting. Bear growl wolf howl sang some original pieces and some Christmas classics with indie flair. the singers voice was smooth and comforting and  his accompanying band was right in sync.

Mountain hymns crowded on stage with its many members.  From a ukulele (?) player to a tambourine man in back this band has it all. before the first song ended they had quickly become my new favorite band. how they are not headlining their own tour is beyond me but i guarantee they will be soon. a great mix of indie, folk and mountain harmony, Mountain hymns has it all. They seemed to be in perfect harmony with each other albeit the tambourine player getting a bit too excited here and there but hay we all get a excited sometimes. At the end of their set they announced an upcoming EP so keep and eye out for that soon.

Finally the star of the show, the girl that's been the center of all the buzz gets on stage for her crowning moment. For a year Marny Proudfit has been working on releasing her c-d and it is finally here. her songs are meaningful and sweet and her voice is bluesy and oooh! inducing. At one point she has us all smiling ear to ear and she sings a Katy Perry song for a friend and the next moment we all clench our  hearts and hold back tears as she sings about her grandfather. Much kudos to Marny and all of her hard work putting out her new c-d and be sure to check it out here.

I think I'm in love with Mojos and i can not wait for the next show. Be sure to check out their facebook and keep updated on upcoming events. Be sure to spread the word about indie Ogden by following this blog, twitter, facebook or sharing it with your friends!
