 Grey Fiction: review by Chelsi Archibald at 1:47 PM Last night I had the privilege of attending a fundraising event with Chuks Vintage Clothing and Amir Jackson's amazing non-profit organization 'Nurture The Creative Mind'. Check both of them out, they are awesome. Located at Universe Gallery, this quaint little place right on Washington Blvd had a really laid back summer vibe thanks to the amazing band Grey Fiction. I'm not kidding when I say that they are one of the best local bands I've seen in awhile. They have an indie contemporary vibe and they describe themselves as "Painters of audible thoughts". This is no exaggeration. Lead singer Paul Muuse has real talent and it shows. His vocals are well balanced and his range is impressive. It's a voice that would sound nice in a recording studio or on stage, both crucial aspects of the music industry. On top of that, he adds in continuous guitar licks and keyboard styles that create a unique sound. Mark Muuse was enjoyable on the drums. His use of personal style in the middle of seemingly relaxed songs brought things in motion. And Matthew Muuse on bass was full of life and fun to watch. It's clear that all these guys are very talented gentlemen. If you haven't heard Grey Fiction play, you should make their next gig a major priority. Their next shows are at The Grove on May 30th and Kilby Court in Salt Lake City on May 31st. Mojos Ogden show review 4/28/11 at 1:38 PM Last night at Mojo's in Ogden,Utah was magic. It took a bit for the he crowd to warm up, it wasn't the usual Mojo goers and everyone was waiting for someone else to get up. I stood in front of the stage as Dirty Blonde took over and soon people gathered around until everyone was standing bobbing their heads even a little hip shake here and there. Dirty Blonde rocked it and the lead singers voice was uniquely epic. Dirty Blonde is a little bit rockabilly, a little bit blues, some indie here and there but mostly just good old fashioned rock n roll. This band is well worth a trip to see them live, a band like this is not easily forgotten. The Dignitaries came on stage with so much energy it was near impossible not to dance around. The lead singer was a powerhouse of energy and knew exactly how to get the crown groovin'. What can only be described as reggae punk with some rock and roll thrown in for good measure, The Dignitaries are anything short of pure joy. There were a couple times that things seemed a bit off beat, more so due to either excitement or technical difficulties than performance, but overall all i wanted to do was skank and drink a mohito and by the second song no one was able to stay sitting down.  Like a step back into a time to the era of Motown , Damato's voice serenades and soothes. His lyrics are genuine with messages that empower and make you want to be better person. Damato has a truly soulful voice and he so effortlessly turns a painful experience into beautiful music that forces you to feel what he feels. By the end of the song the weight of it all lifted, and you're free. Damato is force to be reckoned with , and i am honored to have been given a glimpse of something so powerful.  Hugo came on stage like a modern cowboy, like a cold beer on a summer day. His music has a way of making you forget that anyone is around, you want to dance and sway like you're all alone. I was especially excited to see Hugo live since watching his Thai music video for his song 'Sai Lom'; It was just so beautiful and moving despite my not understanding a single word. Hugo is a mix of blues, Appalachia, soul and rock n roll creating a unique blend that is comparable to no other. Hugo's performance was really one i will never forget, effortless and magic, a perfect ending to a perfect show. Guest post:Mojos local metal night review by Liam Williams at 10:10 AMMojos has been getting a lot of buzz for touring acts Hugo, D’Amato, and other shows being put on with rick shoes, and Utah indie shows. In fact from this partnership were certain to see many incredible shows being brought to this café and gallery in the heart of Ogden. However mojos stays true to its roots and remains a great venue for musicians of all ages, styles, experience levels, and following to showcase their music, and have a great experience doing it. Saturdays are usually themed nights; last Saturday was metal with Flames Breach Our Mouths, lovingly referred to as f.b.o.m., Amplitude, The Dark Past, and Numbered with the Dead, Some very diverse music, but all firmly in the metal veins. The night opened up with fbom, a modern metal band in the veins of under oath, as I lay dying, perhaps some from Autumn to ashes in there, opened up the night. There power trio is solid, with a full sound, musically there very talented young men, good songs, tight break downs, great energy, some solid head banging riffs and enough lyrical content to make it interesting even though you cant always make out the words. These boys are good, but there not phenomenal yet. It feels as though when they're on stage together they're moving around each other. Doug does a good job of getting low but frankly crab core from only the front man looks a little out of place. If they can get there energy up just a bit more from all members they will put on an incredible show, but they did open this night up well. Next up was Amplitude, I’m pretty sure these kids were still in high school, which I only say because they're a hell of a lot better than I was in high school. I’ve always loved that mojos is a venue that allows young musicians to cut there teeth in a pretty relaxed environment, where they don’t get ridiculed or face harsh criticism. Right when I first met these kids I was worried they might be trying a bit to hard with there appearance. Normally bands who put that much effort into there appearance are over compensating for poorly written music, however it turned out that they were more than face painted stitches, and ripped up shirts. They're front woman 'star shine' has one hell of a set of pipes on her, from clean vox to screams to growls. Unfortunately while the band was skilled, and the crowd was loving there wasn’t much show to the band. It’s called shoe gazing, where musicians stand on stage, play well and admire there shoes. When this band gets into their music and starts rocking out to the music they make, They will be great. There is a lot of potential there. The Dark Past got me very excited. Music is a skill you develop with practice and these guys have years under there collective belt. They were exciting, their music was well written, technical, energetic and heavy. The trio had such a full sound they had no room for other members, and used every bit of space afforded to them. At one point bassist/ vocalist nick stepped out into the crowd and played a bass solo. Guitarist Adrian made good use of the be awesome here platform, and all while playing great technical death metal with a touch of grind core without the chug chug. I couldn’t tell you a single word of their songs, but I could tell you what their mosh pit felt like. The crowd had been amped up since fbom played their first note. The skill of dark past built that energy and numbered with the dead carried it out till there last note. Numbered with the Dead are metal heads from bountiful. There’s a quote in the movie slc punk “when we are free rebellion comes slow, we grow complacent. But in an oppressive religious state, where the majority doesn’t even belong to said religion, it comes like fire.” These boys brought the fire, heavy growled vocals, screaming guitars, a touch of punk, a great dollop of anger at their oppression, and you have numbered with the dead. They put on a great show with every member taking a little time to show off, bring the energy of the crowd up even more, but not taking away from the music. Im not a huge fan of growls, I like screams at points but growling through the entire song every song isn’t my thing. They did a good job of it, but I would have liked to hear a bit more punk influence to see what it adds to them. All in all it was one hell of a metal night and on the day before Easter Sunday, even better. GROW- The Red Party at 11:35 AMLast night was a momentous night exceeding my expectations and going far beyond. I was graciously gifted a ticket to The Red Party benefit for GROW, the gathering the resources of women group. Grow is an all inclusive, grass roots women’s networking community, created by the women who participate in it. Their sole purpose is to invite all women to come together to create community, have fun, meet new people and to support each other as they all share their creativity, ideas and resources with one another. The event was held at the Crowley art gallery on historic 25Th street. Everyone dressed up in their best shades of red and gathering in the gallery for music, dancing and the flow of endless wine. Revolver, a local Beatles tribute band, held nothing back when they played and they got the crowd dancing until we could no longer stand. The chef made a roast beef that can only be described as 'perfect'. Crème brûlée, lavendar cookies, fudge and other deserts were being passed around and were all incredible. In the mezzanine there was a silent auction as well as a tarot reader. I was feeling open so i tried out my luck with a little tarot and was truly moved by her intuitive reading. Everything was clear and was exactly what i needed to hear, a perfect compliment to a perfect night. This event showed me how powerful having a community of women is, and how amazing the women of Ogden are. Business owners and community members support each other, promote each other and want each other to succeed. They gather all of their knowledge, resources and skills and come together to better the community and to better themselves and each other. It really was a powerful night and i encourage all of you women of Ogden to attend the next grow meeting. I want to thank the women of GROW and all of the amazing people who made this event happen. Thank you for making Ogden the inspiring place that it is and thank you for all your hard work building this community. Ogden on the rise at 9:21 AM My daughter is a brave little girl. Yesterday we had the great pleasure of going to a dental appointment and i had nagging feeling it was not going to go well but i was wrong. Thanks to the dentists and assistants my daughter wasnt scared in the least in fact i think she liked it. Unfortunately we do have to go back and get a couple teeth capped a couple are chipped thanks to her love of running full speed at hard objects and jumping off high places and she may have an enamel deficiency. But soon it'll all be over with and my bean can go on jumping off things without pain...OK maybe with a mouth guard. Also some exciting news! My first article on Ogden music and arts is now up and running at sloucher magazine. Be sure to check it out and let me know what you think. Usually Wednesdays are my favorite day of the week but i don't think I'm going outside today. its freezing and the wind is blowing so hard it knocked my trashcan down the street. I think today is a good day for soup and movies and kinect dance aerobics. But if your brave enough to go out in the cold there are plenty of rad events to enjoy.
