Tuesday! Ogden City Primary Elections, Art House Cinema Review at 11:06 PM

If you've been living under a rock, you probably aren't aware of the Ogden City Municipal Elections which are the talk of the town. Today is Primary Election Day!!! For a sample ballot click here! It's that time of year when the city is plastered with campaign signs as you drive to work & school. Being a busy person, I rarely have time to know who, what, and why I should vote. But this election is especially important. Did you know that by voting in a local election your vote can be worth the weight of over 100 voters alone? People rarely vote locally, being mostly concerned with big government. (Don't even get me started on the electoral college.) So if you really want your vote to mean something, voting locally is key. Take a quick look at this map to know where your voting booth is located. Plus, you can brag on Facebook to your friends. Be hip, be cool, get with the program and VOTE!

I encourage everyone to watch this short video on each of the candidates and I've also listed their campaign websites:

Jonny Ballard

Mike Caldwell

Jason Goddard

Neil A. Hansen

Brandon S. Stephenson

John H. Thompson

Susan “Susie” Van Hooser

Steve Van Wagoner

After you're done voting, swing on down to Art House Cinema 502. I had the privilege of being treated like royalty as I viewed the film, 'General Orders No. 9'. A film full of gorgeous imagery and subtle messages of hope, history, and geography, consider 'A story told with maps, dreams, and prayers'. I'm sure an intellectual Ogden voter like you will love 'one last trip down the rabbit hole before it's paved over'. You'll be super relaxed in Art House's cozy theater, where you can sip on a Mexican style Coke in a recycled glass bottle and chomp on some kettle corn.

And here are your day's events!

All day

Wednesday! Yoga, Chess Club, Nature Journaling, Gang Prevention at 11:14 AM

Hey you! Happy Wednesday! I know that we only had one day of work so far this week, but I'm still happy we're half way through. It's been insane.
I happen to run an After School program through the fantastic national organization 4H and I'm also a volunteer for the amazing work that Nurture The Creative Mind is doing with youth in our community. Needless to say, I work with some of the best kids on planet earth. That's why I'm so passionate about the impact of youth programming in our community of Ogden. Tonight and tomorrow night, there will be the 2011 Northern Utah Gang & Youth Violence Conference here in Ogden. They will be discussing things like the impact of gangs on our community & a prisoner's family, Ogden's real-time gang monitor and gang prevention programs available to take part in. Not only will this be informative, but it will be key in helping our youth avoid gangs and tough choices like drug use and preventing violence.
The conference will be held at the Ogden Megaplex Theatre, 2351 Kiesel Ave. Ogden, Utah. The conference will run from 8:00 A.M. until 4:30 P.M. each day. Registration and continental breakfast begin at 7:00 A.M. Parking is free.

Zombie Survival Guide 3: Places to Avoid at 11:15 AM

Trish Strank
Strankenstein's Zombie Prom
Steve Strank
Strankenstein's Zombie Prom
Phantom FX

Hello.
Ok, let’s get down to serious brass tacks here.  Ogden is not a haven for the weak, or the craven, or those that feel that they are somewhere above the rest of us.  Those that feel that they have the ability to survive, are in for a very unpleasant surprise.
The Zombie Menace does not, and will not discriminate, and they will walk (not run) over the entire populous in a very quick, wildfire action, unless we protect, and educate ourselves.  As I have always believed, the first and most important thing is education.  Today...We begin that process.
In the first 24 hours of a major zombie outbreak, we find ourselves in the most crucial section of containment.  This is the period of time that we find ourselves needing to be the most cautious,  and yet we also need to be the most daring.  A zombie outbreak is nothing more than a virus with two major factors involved.
First, it is fast acting, and 100% lethal.  If you are infected, you will die.
Second, it has a contagion that we do not yet fully understand.  The most obvious means of infection is through the bite, but we also have some reports of the virus also surviving in the air long enough to infect through contact with blood.
There are places that humans will usually end up going to, by one means or another, in these first 24 hours, when there is panic, chaos, and the entire world seems to be running amok.  These are places that you, faithful reader, will want to avoid at all costs.
First, you will want to stay away from hospitals, at ALL costs.
McKay-Dee Hospital is the biggest, and baddest place on this entire list that you will want to avoid.  If you find yourself in an ambulance, or squad car for any reason heading to this place, you need to be prepared to fight hard, and fast to get the hell out of there.  Every single person in that initial period that is bitten by another person, or attacked, or hurt during that time, not to mention all the staff and patients that are there currently.  That is a very large amount of people, that within twenty-four hours will be zed heads, roaming around ready to eat your face off.
With Ogden Regional Medical Center, and several smaller IHC clinics, doctor’s offices in strip malls, there are several major areas that can produce zombies very, VERY fast.
Second on the list is places of worship.  Anyone who has a belief in a merciful, loving deity, will more likely than not, turn to their deity in a time that seems that it could be the end of the world.  There are so many different, and amazing places for worship in Ogden that I won’t spend much time talking about individual ones too much...But to give you an idea...
The Ogden LDS Temple, on 22nd, the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepard, the Unitarian Universalist Church, St. Joseph’s, Elim Lutheran, Trinity Presbyterian, Second Baptist, not including all of the smaller locations, and the various LDS church houses in every neighborhood.  It seems in end times, the fear of the unknown is only trumped by the fear of our gods.  Beware everyone, these places will be jam packed with people looking for salvation.  But, by the end of the first few days, you might as well put a Chuck-a-Rama sign outside each one of them.
The last place that will have a major impact within the first few, crucial, hours are all of the police stations in the area.  Of course, faithful readers, I am sure that some of you know quite well where your local police station is...(Shame on you), the rest of us may not be so sure.  With there being the county sheriff’s department, and several city police stations for Ogden, South Ogden, Riverdale, etc...there will be ample opportunity for you to be bitten there as well.  These are the places that the unsuspecting police officers will be rounding up all of the perpetrators who are walking around biting people, looting, and running bat-shit crazy through the streets professing the end of the world.  Remember guys, keep a level head, and don’t do anything stupid.  There are still people upholding the law in the first few weeks, so don’t do anything that can get you put here.  I can imagine nothing worse than starving to death over a few weeks period in a steel cage, with hundreds, if not thousands of zombies on the other side, reaching in, trying to eat me.
Don’t be dumb, faithful readers...Remember, WWJD?
What would Jeff do?
Rock over London,
Rock on Chicago,
Foldgers, good to the last drop.
Now, here is what is going on today...

Ain’t No Party Like a Saturday Party, Because a Saturday Party Don’t Stop at 12:40 AM

So my brother and his wife are visiting for the weekend, and we went down to Moab for a couple of days. They live in Brooklyn, and they are very unused to skies that are so large and mountains that take up most of the sky and the wondrous natural beauty of life that reminds you how life is a miracle and being alive is a magical journey, etc. etc. They exclaimed a lot—wow! And Oh my god, and, this is just stunning! And every time they did, I said aw, thank you! Because I don’t know if you know this, but I’m the gal who made the Delicate Arch. Carved the whole park right out of the rock. I wield a mean glacier, I’ll tell you what. I tried very hard to make Utah nice for you.

Seriously, I was excited to bounce around and say see! See how awesome Utah is? It rules! I bet Brooklyn doesn’t have desert chipmunks and natural rock bridges, does it? No, they agreed. It sure doesn’t.

You guys, have you noticed how pretty Utah is? It’s so pretty. And not just because you’re here, but you really do fancy up the place something fierce, hot stuff.

And now get your fabulous butt out the door and enjoy the hell out of Ogden, at one of Saturday’s delightful events full of delightfulness. We’re trying very hard to make Utah nice for you!

Tuesday: National Toasted Marshmallow Day, Art House, Softball Registration at 9:31 AM

Photobucket

Last night at Mojo's Caffe Gallery, I was able to say hi to the owner friendly Ron and see some of the most talented people in the Ogden area do what they do best, play some sweet tunes.

I got there after class so I was only able to see Christopher Cullen & Candid Coyote to begin with, but they were extremely chill and fun to watch.

Up next was The Old World, who's talent never ceases to amaze me. I'm not going to lie, I've known these guys for awhile and I've seen them play a few times. But let me give you some information on them to prove why I keep coming back for more. Austin Frodsham who plays bass, fiddle, mandolin, and vox, was like the fiddling champion of Utah when we went to high school. I'm sure he'll correct me if I'm wrong, but the kid is a big deal. If you want true musicality, this is your band. Casey Romney has fantastic voice and Stratton McCauseland is a very talented pianist, whom I've heard play solo before and was blown away by.

Marny Proudfit's voice makes the world go 'round. Everyone needs to hear the sweet crooning she possesses. There should be a record of her voice in every home. No joke.

Then Matt The Electrician came onstage and pretty much blew everyone away. From Austin, Texas, most of his songs revolve around his 21-year relationship with his wife and his 7-year-old son. He teases that this may be unrelateable to some, but his music is extremely raw and reachable, making it especially wonderful to listen to. Think Iron & Wine, but with more passion. I'm not joking.

Sorry to all the bands I missed out on, if you were playing with the likes of these above, I'm sure you were amazingly talented.

****There are a ton of awesome things happening today! Does your garden need a facelift? Do you have some extra blood ready to donate to the needy? Are you wanting to kick some butt in softball? Are you interested in our new mayoral candidates and how they are going to bring change to Ogden? CHECK OUT THE EVENTS!

Today is National Toasted Marshmallow Day, so if you can wait through the high of 92 degrees, it should be more cool tonight when you want to go roastin'. Have you tried those massive novelty size mallows the size of baseballs? They are a true art. I read the nutrition facts for those suckers, 4 regular mallows to 1 of those monsters! Have fun & enjoy summer while it lasts!

Monday: art films, nature and beautiful music at 7:15 PM

What an amazing weekend it was. Saturday i put on my prettiest dress and my giant hat and went out on an adventure in the desert with some good friends. We explored abandoned places, got a flat tire, took silly photos, got a bit dehydrated and sunburned and of course got a little target practice in. It was nice to get away for a minute and forget about everything i am obligated to do. sometimes we need little getaways , even if it is just a few hours.
I am excited to announce that the new website will be launching on the first. We hit a couple bumps at first but no one is stopping us now and we are all so very excited. I think this first week with the new indie Ogden team has been fantastic and i cant wait to see what the future holds. From here we can only go up right?
