Guest post: Groovin' at the Sand Trap with Fry Sauce at 9:50 AM

Having never been to the Sand Trap before, I was pleasantly surprised at how laid back and friendly the employees were. I knew right away it was not your regular bar scene. Everyone's friendly faces and service made me feel like I was right at home.

I have often heard about the groovy beats of the local band Fry Sauce, but I didn't get the privilege of enjoying their tunes until last night. I'll tell you one thing, they know how to bust a beat! If you like to chill out, take a load off and just plain have a good time, Fry Sauce is the band for you. Songs like 'Slacker' and 'One Spot' help you forget all your problems and remember to simply enjoy life. Who doesn't love a message like that?

Rich Melton and Aaron Meyers on vocals are like the vintage jam rock you've grown up to, only with a natural high. Ben Malan and Ben Allred on guitar and bass respectively, had licks that reminded me of the Red Hot Chili Peppers back in the funk days when they were working with George Clinton. Amazing talent is reticent with these guys. Aaron's skills on the drums are extremely fun to watch. My brother is a drum corps major with University of Utah and professional drum corps across the nation. Even he was impressed with Aaron's groovy beats.

It wasn't just the fact that the band becomes your best friend right when you walk in the door or their sheer stamina in playing two sets from 9:30pm to 2:00am, it was the happy-go-lucky vibe they created just by being themselves. Their fans seemed so connected to them that you felt like a member of the family just by rubbing shoulders with them. And I dare you to try and keep yourself from dancing! I'll definitely be back to the Sand Trap to hang out with Fry Sauce again.

Thursday in ogden utah- music, art and foodies at 10:20 AM

I had so much fun last night on my family adventure! I won tickets to see Rhythmic Circus at Peery's Egyptian Theater from the amazing Visit Ogden group. My daughter loved dancing around to the music and even made a little friend. I have never seen tap dancing before and i couldn't stop grinning, it is definitely something everyone must watch at least once. Its hard to capture the energy of tap dancing on film, live is a totally different experience and these guys and gal are amazing at what they do. I loved the jazzy/funky band they played with the the hilarious little introductions. Definitely check out Rhythmic circus! Unfortunately we had to leave a bit early though to avoid the inevitable meltdown. Hunter was getting a bit cranky and needed a change of pace. We happened to have some leftover tokens from our Staycation trip so we headed over to Fat Cats for some arcade games. Hunter immediately ran over to the spider man, her new favorite cartoon, and began squealing her sonic boom squeal of joy. After spending all out tokens on skee ball and the merry go round we let her run around pretending to play games before cashing in our tickets for spiders and monster fingers. Overall family date night success! For more photos check out Indie Ogden's facebook page!

So I am pretty excited about today's events. There is quite a bit happening and they are all really amazing. If you've been procrastinating trying out some of Ogden's great events then tonight would be the night to finally do it. Don't be shy, Ogden is an incredibly friendly town! Vintage Restaurant and Tea Room at 12:35 AM

Every once in a while i stumble upon something so amazing and beautiful that i actually hurt myself from smiling so much. Yesterday was one of those days and i still can not stop grinning from the experience. Vintage Restaurant and Tea room is a cozy little place nestled inside a historic building in downtown Ogden. You might have driven, walked and biked by it a thousand times and just barely missed this hidden treasure. Its well worth the hunt and once you step inside you will forever be a tea room enthusiast.

After i entered the Vintage restaurant and tea room it was clear that all of my preconceived ideas about tea were all wrong. Gone are the days of Tea parties being only for Gossiping grandmothers, socialites and little girls in poofy dresses (though they can still have their fun too)! Kathy Cushman is bringing back tea time and she is doing it with style. Inside the Vintage restaurant and tea room is an impressive collection of tea pots, vintage decor and hand made beauties and a lot of the items you see are for sale at great prices too.Traditionally, loose tea is brewed in a teapot and served in teacups This is accompanied by sandwiches, scones and usually cakes and pastries; Kathy Cushman does all of this and more.I chose the butterscotch tea and Kathy brought it out in a beautiful ceramic pot with 2 adorable tea cups. On a glass platter sat green tea, toffee and butterscotch scones still warm from the oven served with a bowl of marscapone cheese. The flavor was divine and the scones were moist and fluffy like sweet velvet. For my daughter Kathy prepared her a kids meal of my daughters choice; nutella and marshmallow finger sandwiches, pink lemonade and strawberries.

As we gabbed and enjoyed our treats my daughter played in the corner in the dress up station. She was thrilled with all of the dresses (over 70 different ones), tiaras, wands and jewelry; giggling wildly at all of the pretty things to try on. Vintage restaurant is available for kids parties as well, offering a variety of food and drink options over multiple courses with plenty of time for fun dress up! The Tea room is a great place to book birthdays, baby showers, bridal showers, group meetings or any other occasion.
Just as we took our lat bite of scone Kathy brought out our salad and sandwiches. Cucumber, chicken/artichoke and red pepper/hummus sandwiches with a wild green salad and raspberry vinaigrette. The bread she uses is from stone ground bakery in salt lake city; it's thick and moist and perfect for finger sandwiches. We soon realize that the best part of dining in a tea house is being able to take our time. We talk, we sip tea and we savor our food; what a concept!

This in itself would have been enough to fully satisfy us but Kathy tells us we aren't quite done yet, there is still dessert!I let Kathy choose for us as she is the expert after all and she brought out a tray of the most gorgeous sweets i have ever seen. Death by Chocolate Cake with Raspberry Sauce, Apple Cinnamon Bread Pudding with Caramel Sauce, Princess Diana's wedding cake, Sticky toffee pudding ( Kate Middleton's favorite) and a beautiful blueberry white chocolate cake. Each one was so rich and incredible; i had a hard time choosing a favorite, but i think the Apple Cinnamon Bread Pudding with Caramel Sauce is my new delight.I'd say my first traditional tea experience was a success. I came to realize that tea time is not just about tea; it's about socializing, taking time out to enjoy the moment and giving yourself time to relax. Vintage restaurant and tea room is not just about food and tea it's an experience to be enjoyed and savored. The tea room offers a unique and delicious experience for all ages with a huge selection of tea, food and desserts even men can appreciate. I encourage everyone to take a trip to Ogden, Utah and experience the beauty of the Vintage restaurant and tea room.

Local Spotlight: Cloud 9 smoke shop at 12:03 AM

If you need hookah and smoking supplies there is a great place to go in Ogden, Utah and that's Cloud 9. I went there yesterday to check out hookah and find some fruity sheesha for my hookah at home. The workers there are incredibly friendly and made me feel like i was visiting an old friend. Cloud 9 has a huge selection of sheesha, incense and smoke supplies. The store smells like a fruit basket from all the flavors! I tried out some blueberry because it smelled like a smoothie and it came in fancy little tin. I have to say I'm eyeing up the pink Ed Hardy hookah and may have to turn my dressing room into a ladies lounge. I admit i don't use a hookah very often, i don't even smoke cigarettes. Every once in a while its just fun to put on belly dance music, eat too much hummus and try out the old hookah. Check out these photos i took of their pretty hookah supplies and check out their WEBSITE.* Here is brief but interesting history of the hookah.

Nargile : A Puff on History

(reprinted from the Turkish Daily News 3/3/97)
One of the oldest and deep rooted traditions in Turkey is the Nargile (Hookah), with both men and women finding great pleasure in smoking the waterpipe. The nargile started a whole new culture which endured for many, many years. Even today the nargile gives enjoyment to a special breed of smokers. The original nargile came from India, but it was rather primitive as it was made out of coconut shell. Its popularity spread to Iran and then to the rest of the Arab world.

But it was in Turkey that the nargile completed its revolution, and did not change its style for the last few hundred years. The nargile became a very important part of the coffee shop culture, finding its popularity in Turkey around the time of Murat the IV'th, 1623-40.The joy that the smokers received from this very simple yet beautiful smoking apparatus was unbelievable. Rules were created even for lighting the pipe, and if a professional smoker saw anyone lighting it the incorrect way, the culprit would be told in no uncertain term " Do yourself and the sacred nargile a favor and put out the coals by blowing into it.

"The nargile itself consists of 4 pieces which are as follows: Agizlik (mouthpiece), Lüle (the top of the nargile), Marpuç (the tube) and the Gövde (the body of the pipe which is filled with water). All pieces of the pipe were produced by special craftsmen, who were named after the pece they produced. Even today, the areas where these craftsmen used to concentrate are called by these names, such as "Marpuççular."Lüles were generally produced in Tophane by Lule makers and the govde's (bottles) were manufactured in Beykoz. These govde's were a unique example of Turkish handcraft and were decorated with floral motifs. Some were made out of silver or crystal. The agizlik's (mouthpieces) were generally carved out of the top of quality amber, because people in those days believed that amber was not the because people in those days believed that amber was not the carrier of germs.

Not all tobaccos qualified for usage in the nargile, and only the dark tobacco imported from Iran found favor with the nargile user. This toabcco was washed several times before use as it was extremely strong. Only oak charcoal was used to be placed on the top of the tobacco. Some professional nargile smokers used certain fruit, like sour cherries or grapes in their govde just to enjoy the motion it created in the water. Other people enjoyed adding pomegranate juice or rose oil to their water for added flavor. The nargile smoker hated anyone lighting their cigarettes on their nargile fire because they felt it disturbed the rhythm of the burning charcoal.

The nargile was so popular and fashionable with the elite ladies of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, that it became the in thing to be photographed with a nargile. If you wanted to be the hostess with the mostest the nargile was a must for popular afternoon tea and intellectual gatherings. Unfortunately like most wonderful things from the past, the nargile suffered a decline with the availability of the cigarettes. But still today, one is able to find a special type of smoker that would only find their enjoyment from smoking the nargile.

*** As with all tobacco products you should use it in moderation, be informed of risks and ALWAYS be of legal age.
