 Friday, Friday, Gotta Get Down on Friday at 10:37 PM When I moved to Ogden, it was with the confident assumption that I’d be moving back to San Francisco within the next year or so. When I moved to Ogden, I was almost afraid to talk about my plans, because everyone I told said, “Utah? Why?” or “Utah? MORMONS!” And I would look sheepish and shrug, or swear it wouldn’t be forever, or blame it on my boyfriend, who grew up in Ogden. When I moved to Ogden, I blamed it on my boyfriend. It was all his idea, me moving to the middle of nowhere. It was only temporary! I was way, way too cool for Utah. I was SO MUCH PRETTIER than Ogden.
Almost five years later, I’m still here, and I like it. I would even venture to say I love it. I love this town, and I love the people. That same boyfriend and I, we own a house and a couple of dogs. Every once in awhile, when the news is really bad, we talk about heading north to Canada, or when it’s really bad or we’ve had a crappy day, south to Mexico. Beachcombers never have to watch CNN or worry about the economy, right?
But they also don’t get to go to karaoke night or watch art films or hit the gallery or buy art to support a worthy cause or rock out to independent artists or eat a lot of hot dogs and watch baseball while the mountains that fill up the horizon all around you turn sunset colors. The way you can tonight! Ogdenites, give thanks you live in Ogden, and check out all the excellent stuff going on tonight in the O.G. Den. We we we we we so excited!

8:15 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Wildcat Block Party, Moench Mall, Stewart Bell Tower Plaza and Tracy Plaza, Weber State University The theme of this year’s block party is “Blast Back to the ’60s,” in honor of the Shepherd Union Building’s 50th anniversary. The event will feature entertainment, music, food and contests for audiences of all ages. A pancake breakfast at 8:15 a.m. will kick off the day’s festivities, with campus and community booths opening at 9 a.m. Scheduled activities include live music by local performers, a ’60s fashion show, Jazzercise and comedy improv groups. At 12:30 p.m. a pep rally will be held at Tracy Plaza, featuring the WSU band, coaches and student-athletes.

Biggest Loser Justin Pope at the Wildcat Block Party, Weber State University Join us at the Wildcat Block Party this Friday to get an autograph and picture with last season's Biggest Loser contestant Justin Pope! Justin is from Logan, Utah and was teammates with Rulon Gardner on the show.
He will be at the Employee Wellness booth under the big white registration tent from 9:30 - 12:30 signing autographs, taking pictures, and sharing his story. Please stop by to say hello!

Fall Bridal Gathering at The Ogden Union Station

5 p.m. Redemption Art Show, private residence, 2724 Pierce Ave. Redemption Art, a nonprofit organization that helps veterans, prisoners and homeless people express themselves through art, is having an exhibit and fundraiser. Free admission, art for sale.
About 250 pieces of art will be on display. Sales of the art are used to buy more art supplies, or are donated to charities helping at-risk children and victims of crimes.

Jazz At The Station: Shaky Trade at 9:32 PM
You've probably heard of the band Shaky Trade before you've heard them play. They have quite the following here in Ogden and it's well deserved. My experience was much the same. I knew Shaky Trade was talented and respected before going to Union Station's monthly 'Jazz At The Station' event. I knew that they are serious musicians and that is no joke. What I didn't know is that Billy Bommer had such a great voice and that his imminent talent has been honed from the public school system and years of experience. It's pretty impressive to say the least. Chris Clemons is absolutely mind blowing. My father played trumpet throughout his academic career, so I know full well that Clemons' can pull off some pretty tricky insane stuff while he is holding that horn in his hands. High notes are not a problem for this guy. Guitar player Brad Wright is the improvisation king of Ogden to be sure. And I was so grateful that this band isn't trying to just imitate some weak impression that people tend to have of jazz music. After taking Jazz History from the meticulous Professor Keven Johansen at the University of Utah, it's been drilled into my head how important fingerboard technique, scoring and improvisation are. And Shaky Trade knows this also. Bassist Greg Shaw and percussionist Michael Wong keep the melody or 'the head' going in a catchy chord progression allowing band mates to do their thing. This is especially refreshing. And Ryan Conger is like the all seeing eye, who can add a Moog or Clavinet where it's needed without even being noticed. These types of moods and interactions with the audience are crucial for jazz music. The bottom line is that Shaky Trade knows their trade, pun intended. Their arrangements are pleasant, fun and full of funk. I will be going to just about any show that this band puts on and look forward to see their continued success. And here are your days events!

Thursday: karaoke. open mic and schmoozing at 9:17 AM Yesterday was awesome. I went in a picnic at municipal park and watched Dan Weldon sing some songs, i got all my errands done by bike ( is there any other way when its sunny out?) , i ate guava Popsicles in my yard and i ended the night at the sand trap singing karaoke with friends. yeah, summer pwns winter. This week is turning out to be quite amazing and i am excited for all the things coming up. Tonight there is a ton going on Tomorrow is the fire in the skies CD release party and lots of other rad events and Saturday i am going on the weekend show again and you will be kept plenty busy with all of the shows and events happening that weekend. Oh whats that?? You've never heard the weekend show? well, i most certainly WILL tell you about it. The weekend show is a Weber FM radio delight. Featuring local music and some lesser known rad jams the weekend show will have you laughing and dancing in no time. Hosted by Jared Christensen, hoagie bear, DJ AJ and tons of fun local guests too. If you love to hear new music and you want to know about local artists you simply must tune into 88.1 Weber FM Saturdays from noon-2! The Weekend Show on 88.1 Weber FM at 11:24 AM Last Saturday was one of my favorite Saturdays ever. I was given the opportunity to make a guest appearance on 'The Weekend Show' to talk about Indie Ogden. I was so nervous since i had never actually even been in a radio station, I've only passed by one...once. All of the equipment and giant window that people can look in is a bit nerve wracking but the guys at the Weekend show really made it easy. After only a few minutes i felt like one of the gang and it felt good to be able to go on the radio and chat about indie Ogden and all the great events happening in this awesome town. The Weekend Show is one one of KWCR's completely student-run radio station operated out of Weber State University in Ogden, Utah.The Weekend guys- Jared, DJ AJ, and Hogie Bear- are hilarious and they love to support local. About 90% of the music that is played on the Weekend show is from local bands and they are always looking for more more talent. If you have a band send your music their way and it may get played on the air. If you don't have a radio don't fret because in this day of technology you can see (yay webcams) and hear The Weekend Show online at weberfm.org, just click listen live. I you didn't catch me on this weekends show (dancing with chewbacca and developing a fear of rattlesnakes) don't panic, i may be back on air soon!
